My illustration work is usually linked to my design projects and those clients who need ideas or art direction as part of the assignment. Different projects may call for different creative approaches, depending on budgets and deadlines. When I am asked to do illustration work, it might be conceptual, vintage-retro, cartoon or technical. When choosing a work style, I talk with the client about the project and my work process as well as their ideas and expectations.
My design work typically involves advertising for small businesses. This might include brand development, collateral design, illustration, social media content creation, copy writing, signage and vehicle graphics.
Signage for exhibits and displays uses all the tools of a graphic designer and illustrator. I’ve done signage for both museums and businesses, and they have different requirements. Exhibit graphics may include way-finding signage and graphics in addition to informational signs. Business signage has to be recognized from a distance, but may also require branding elements that may influence the creative process.
The cartoons I have created over the years have been conceptual, conveying their message through a visual story, which requires no caption. While a caption can expand its message, I feel a successful cartoon can, and should, be able to stand on its own. I admire the work of Sergio Aragones, Tomi Ungerer and Albert Uderzo.
My sketchbook is where I record items of interest, or for brainstorming when I have an illustration or graphic for which I need to generate ideas. Here are images from various sketchbooks showing the idea generation and early work process involved with different projects.
The collage work I do is related to a series of educational posters that I have been designing for several years. Because art in school classrooms is usually related to lesson topics, I have created posters that focus on themes such as 20th Century Visionaries, Exploration & Discovery, Freedom & Equality and Science & Invention, Faith & Spirituality, Love & Sex, Food & Wine and Writers & Directors. These collage portraits pair an individual with a quotation attributed to them. My intent is to inspire students to dedicate themselves to their own education, using examples of people who have achieved great things by committing themselves to a cause.
